Success is A Journey

Posted: August 26, 2012 in Talk Notes

In whatever man does without God, he must fail miserably or succeed more miserably.
—George Macdonald

Genesis 32:24
(God wrestled with Jacob:)

– when we go through things that stir us, we believe we wrestled with God when there are instances that it is God who chooses to wrestle with us, to dislocate our areas of strength: things we believe that complete us when it’s supposed to be just God who can complete us.

We have to understand that in times when we clearly deserve a reward yet someone else gets it even though odds were in our favour, it is because we still cannot carry success at the moment, so it is withheld- temporarily.

At times when God seems to ask us a question through a circumstance we go through and the answer seems apparent, we have to know that there is something else that God wants us to realize- beyond what is readily seen.

Stephen: God’s Man

Acts 6
(what’s behind the stoning of Stephen; it cannot be as simple as being a Christ-follower)

5 C’s
1. Christian CREDENTIALS
– given wisdom by the Holy Spirit
– face was like a face of an angel
– he tells about the truth; what things are
– he has the grasp of truth
– he knows the story of God
– he knows God intimately
– in reality, when people ask us why Jesus is the only way & how it is so, our answer or knowledge on it determines how we seek God and have come to know Him, especially when people aren’t really interested in knowing our answer and they just want to question our faith.
– full of the word of God
– it’s one thing to know the scripture, to have been able read it and quote it, but it’s another to say right off what being a Christ-follower is.
– how Christian are you?
– how firm one is in his/her faith in Christ

Philippians 1:6

Acts 6:7
(comes out in times we’re most unaware of)

Cold Plunge

Posted: August 16, 2012 in BlueBox

I haven’t had this giddy feeling— silly, gargantuan grin and all— since 3rd grade, when my favorite aunt came over for a visit, after being away for so many months because she got married.

I’m talking about that instance when you’d run to your room as a kid because you are filled with so much inexplicable glee from something that causes you to jump up and down, and then you burrow your head in a pillow to do that scream of delightful joy as a finale.

After that, you go back outside, smiling from ear to ear, and giving them a slight glimpse of how happy you are.

THIS is THAT kind.^

Mourning is healthy and necessary to the healing process. If we deny or delay our grieving, we deny or delay our healing.
-Keith Smith

James 4:9

Common Defenses Used to Protest Ourselves from Pain:

1. Denial (or selective forgetting)
– Minimizing
– Blaming others
– Blaming yourself
– Rationalizing
– Distracting
– Becoming Hostile
– “Spiritualizing”
at times people think that pain (from evil) is something that God allowed because He has a great plan, when really, it was the way of the world, how it was the devil who had something to do with it.

Not taking time to grieve by being irritable, hostile, etc.,

How Do We Grieve or Mourn Over Our Losses?

1. Accept the Pain or Loss
2. Acknowledge the fact that NO LOSS is UNIQUE

1 Corinthians 10:13
(no temptation is unique to one man)

1 Peter 5:8
(how others go through the same kind of suffering)

2 Corinthians 4:16
(though our outward man is

3. Admit your NEED for OTHERS in times of LOSS

2 Samuel 1:11
(how David mourns)

Roman 12:15
(rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn)

4. Actively seek CLOSURE
5.Anticipate God’s COMFORT and LOVE in time of Loss.

5 Stages of Response to Death

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
– asking God to bring it all back in exchange of doing thing for Him
4. Depression
5. Acceptance
– There is no way for us to go through healing without going through grief; without mourning.

Isaiah 53:3
(how God understands and even Jesus mourns)

Job 42:10
(how Job- after trials- God blessed Him twice as much as he was before)

– Not pursued at the expense of others nor at the expense of disobeying rules.
– Always goes back to ones with values.

3 Questions to Ponder on:

1. Who are you?
2. What are you good at?
3. What are you here for?

Christian definition:
Pursuit of a worthy ideal which benefits others

Possession of good qualities to an unusual degree.

“Excellence cannot be defined by the ways of the world”

Philippians 4:8
(what to meditate on)

– how do we decide what’s worthy or ideal?
– how do we decide who’s worthy or ideal?
– WHOm do all depend on?

Proverbs 9:10
(what is wisdom)

“It is one thing to show your child the way, and a harder thing to then stand out of the way.”
– Robert Brault

Romans 5:3
(in times of suffering)

ENVY is the art of counting other people’s blessings instead of your own.

– you compare your self with others
– if you need to, then you have to leave others to win

– who you used to be, and who you ought to become
– you do not leave those who are in need.

A Loser is not one who runs last in the raise but one who just sits and never tries to do anything.
